Patient Instructions for Gastroscopy

 Your doctor has determined that a gastroscopy is necessary for further evaluation or treatment of your condition.

A gastroscopy is a procedure that enables the doctor to see the lining of the stomach for abnormalities. This is done by passing a flexible tube via the mouth, through which a bright light is passed via fibre optics. Unlike X-rays, a gastroscopy allows the doctor to see the surface of areas directly and can provide far more detail and accuracy than an X-ray.

Preparation for Gastroscopy

IMPORTANT

The stomach must be completely clean and empty for the procedure to be successful.  Inadequate preparation may result in having to repeat the test on another day.  To achieve complete emptying, it is most important that you follow these instructions.

Please read all instructions carefully:

Please keep taking your usual medications and check with your doctor if you are taking Warfarin, Aspirin or Diabetic Medication. If you are unsure or on other medication, please consult your doctor for advice. Please bring all medications you are currently taking to the hospital with you on your admission.

  • No food or drink to be taken from 12.00 midnight prior to your admission
  • Diabetics should only take half of their morning Insulin or tablets with just a sip of fluid
  • You will need to arrange for someone to take you home – as you will not be allowed to leave unescorted.
